Jefferson County High School Student Activists the winners of Julie J. Boucher Award for Intellectual Freedom

The CAL Intellectual Freedom Committee is pleased to announce that this year’s Julie J. Boucher award for Intellectual Freedom will be award to the student activists from Jefferson County High Schools. The award is being given for the their activism involving recent decisions by their school board, in which they have shown serious concern both for the quality of their education and principles of intellectual freedom.

This year the Jefferson County school board proposed the creation of a review board for AP American History classes that would "promote patriotism and ‘positive aspects’ of U.S. History and avoid encouragement of ‘civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law.’” In response, hundreds of students, parents, and teachers engaged in their own forms of civil disobedience. They walked out and demonstrated in protest against what they saw as a move toward censorship, and a watering down of the history curriculum.

The protests have been an impressive use of dissent that has captured attention on a national level, while engaging questions of censorship, history, and social protest. For these reasons, the Intellectual Freedom Committee is pleased to award this year’s Julie J. Boucher award to the student activists of Jefferson County.
