Communities and Libraries

Mark your calendars (in ink!) for the 2008 Colorado Association of Libraries annual conference, November 6-8 at the Marriott Denver Tech Center. Our theme this year is Communities and Libraries and we are pleased to announce that this will be CAL’s first ever “green” conference.

The success of the annual CAL conference depends on the participation of everyone in our library community. It’s still early in the year, but we’re already pooling statewide resources, expertise, and energy. Consider what YOU are willing contribute to the Colorado library community of patron services providers; children’s and outreach services specialists; cataloging, resource-sharing, and technical experts; IT and HR administrators; managers, directors, and board members. We invite everyone to step up and make this year’s conference the best yet!

Take some time to look at your communities with fresh eyes and notice the impact your library has on education, economic development, and the revitalization of the community. Notice, too, the opportunities for growth and impact in which our libraries can take part. The work you do has a profound effect on creating the community you are part of. Come to CAL 2008 and share your stories!

How To Be A "Green" Attendee

  • Ride the rails: Take public transportation. There is a light-rail stop, Belleview Station, on the E Line , just two blocks from the conference hotel.
  • Find a friend and share a ride: If you drive, try to carpool
  • BYOB (Bring Your Own Water Bottle): There will be no bottles of water available at the conference (but there will be 5-gallon jugs of water and paper cups).
  • Handouts: We hope to have no paper handouts, and are encouraging our presenters to post their handouts to the CAL Web site.
  • Recycle: Recycling bins will be available throughout the hotel; we hope you will use them.
More information about how this event will be environmentally friendly will be available here as it develops.

New! Events & Service Auction for Scholarships!

We are pleased to announce a new way to support professional development in CAL. This year will mark the first Events & Service Auction to benefit scholarship funds through the Colorado Library Educational Foundation (CLEF).

What's an events & service auction?
Unlike other auctions where you bid on actual items, an events & service auction lets you bid on events like an authentic Chinese dinner cooked in your home or a guided wildflower hike, and on services like personal shopping assistance or custom knitted clothing. The event & service providers will be generously donating their time and materials, so all the money from your winning bid will go directly to scholarships for CAL events.

The auction will be held during the 2008 annual CAL conference, with winners notified shortly thereafter. Our goal is to have events or services around the state, so no matter where you live, you'll be able to take part in this fun way to raise money for an excellent cause.

Want to be one of those generous donors? Please use our online donation form to submit your information: http://www.formsite.com/claforms/clef/index.html. If you know someone who would be a good donor candidate, please encourage them to contribute as well.

Here are some examples of what you could donate:

  • host a theme dinner for 6-8 people at your home -- you could choose an ethnic/regional cuisine, or just promise hearty food and drink along with fellowship
  • lead a group hike along your favorite trail and provide snacks and conversation
  • offer your sartorial services as a personal shopper, providing advice and a coffee break or lunch as part of the package
  • host a pub crawl & provide the first round or two of drinks (or, a round of drinks & shuttle service back home so no one gets hurt)
  • offer a custom-knitted garment
  • plan a game night with snacks, beverages, and the actual game for each person or couple to take home
  • if you're a home brewmaster, host a tasting party of your latest creations
For group ideas, keep in mind that most people will be bidding for one or two spots (and not the whole event), so please include the minimum and maximum numbers of participants that you're willing to accommodate. For events, it's best to have a date picked out ahead of time so people can plan their schedules accordingly.

See us at conference to bid on the fun!
