Why CAL?
By Ruby Nugent, Library Clerk, Aurora Public Library
CAL Paralibrarian Division Chair 2008
REFORMA-Colorado Chair 2008/2009
When I began working in public libraries, it came quite by accident. I applied and received a position that included some library clerk work. As I continued to learn about the library and its place in the community, I began to love it. I became more active in programming, supervising, training new employees and - most fulfilling for me - working with the community.
As a paralibrarian, I looked for other ways I could learn and grow as a library clerk everyday and felt becoming a CAL member was the next step for me.
With the support of my co-workers and supervisor I became a member two years ago and was able to commit my time and dedication to two groups within the CAL organization. I am currently the Chair - Elect for REFORMA-CO and Chair for the Paralibrarian Division of CAL. I have found both groups different and exciting. They both contain members and boards who are dedicated and motivated to improve library services, while also continuing their education as paralibrarians and library staff.
Being a member of CAL has given me the opportunity to network and plan with others within the state (and sometimes from outside as well!) at conferences and workshops.
In the seven years I have worked in public libraries, the past two have been the most fulfilling for me as a paraprofessional. I feel fortunate to be able to spread my wings and explore the ever-changing library world both personally and professionally. I am learning new things and meeting new people everyday and am happy to be able to share it with those who may take my love for libraries and have a greater understanding of what it means to me to be a CAL member.
