ColASL Virtual Meeting on the National Library of Medicine
February 24, 2016

3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), is the world’s largest biomedical library. NLM maintains and makes available a vast print collection and produces electronic information resources on a wide range of topics that are searched billions of times each year by millions of people around the globe. In this session learn about NLM’s free databases for researching general health, drugs and supplements, genetics, environmental health and toxicology, and clinical trials. These resources may come in handy at work and at home!

A Colorado native, Dana Abbey has a background in public libraries, holding positions as a librarian, manager, and acting director responsible for strategic planning, development, operating management, new service development, marketing, promotion and leadership.  She has worked in prescription drug monitoring and in library consulting, providing pre-planning studies, collection projections, collection management, and storage and specifications planning for corporate and specialized libraries. In her current position, Dana serves as the Health Information Literacy Coordinator for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, MidContinental region, working to improve the public's access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health.

On January 11, 2016 at 2:00, Zev Paiss, Executive Director of the National Hemp Association, was our guest speaker on a virtual conference.  To watch this conference please click here or go to

In June the Denver Post ran an article entitled Colorado hemp grows from novelty to industry with potential.  The article states that "hemp's industrial potential is being explored in farm fields, factories, retail outlets and university laboratories throughout Colorado".  Zev Paiss, our guest speaker (and an expert cited in this article), has led the National Hemp Association to build a strong membership program and oversees a growing series of educational and social events.  Learn about the differences between marijuana and hemp, how entrepreneurs are finding opportunities in the hemp industry, and about the new national campaign to legalize hemp.

Thank you Jenna Obee, Karen Alfino, and Jessica King for helping to arrange this informative virtual conference.

This special libraries directory was created by Leif Madsen, the Learning Resource Center Manager at the Denver School of Nursing, on behalf of ColASL and CAL. The other directories that can be found on the site are still in development but the aim is to have a link to every single library and museum in the State.
